A bang from the garage, and now it will not lift

- A torsion spring letting go. It is loud enough to be heard from inside the house and it usually happens as the door starts to move.
- What the tech checks
- The tech looks for a clean gap in the coil above the door, then lifts the door by hand to feel the full unassisted weight.
- What happens next
- The spring is replaced, in a pair when both are the same age, and the cables and drums that took the shock are checked with it.
The opener strains, lifts a few inches, and gives up
- Usually
- Also a spring, most of the time. The opener is trying to do the whole job on its own and the safety cut-out is stopping it.
- What the tech checks
- The tech pulls the release cord and lifts by hand. If it is dead weight, the springs are gone, whatever the opener is doing.
- What happens next
- Keep pressing the button and you cook the opener as well, which turns a spring bill into a spring and an opener bill.
The door hangs crooked, or one side sits lower
- Usually
- Usually a cable that has jumped its drum rather than the spring itself, though a broken spring can cause it.
- What the tech checks
- The tech takes the tension off first, then resets both cables on the drums evenly so the door lifts square.
- What happens next
- Do not run the opener until it is sorted. A crooked door is how a cable job becomes a bent track and a panel.
Nothing is broken yet, but it is getting slower and louder

- A spring near the end of its cycle life. They fatigue quietly for months before the day they do not.
- What the tech checks
- The tech counts the coils, looks for rust and gaps, and does the halfway balance test with the opener disconnected.
- What happens next
- This is the cheap visit. Replacing a tired spring on a Tuesday costs less than the same spring going on a Sunday.

What people ask when a spring goes
Can I still open the door by hand?
Carefully, and only to get a car out. With the spring gone you are lifting the whole weight of the door, which on a double is more than most people expect. Pull the red release cord first, lift from the middle, and do not stand under it.
Why replace both springs when only one broke?
Because they were fitted on the same day and rated for the same number of cycles. The second one is not fine, it is next. Replacing the pair is one visit instead of two, and you get told that before we start, not after.
What does a spring replacement cost?
It depends on the door: how many springs, what size, and whether the cables took damage when it went. Tell us what happened on the phone and you get the real figure before we book, rather than a number on a website that changes at your door.
Can someone come out today?
Often yes, and a car shut in the garage moves you up the list. Say that when you call. The phone is answered whatever the hour, and if the day is genuinely full we will tell you rather than hold the slot.
Can I just replace the spring myself?
You can buy the part. A wound torsion spring holds enough energy to break a hand, and the winding bars are most of the skill. It is the one job on a garage door we would tell a friend to hand over, and we would say the same if you were not calling us.
How long does it take?
A standard pair on a residential door is usually done inside the visit, including the balance test and resetting the opener. If the cables or drums are damaged as well the tech will say so, with the cost, before carrying on.
What if it goes again?
The parts and the labour are warranted. Call the same number, say it is a return visit on work we did, and we come back out to it. Ask the tech for the written terms while they are with you.
