Before anyone touches the door
The number comes first, not at the end.
The way this trade goes wrong is always the same. A truck arrives, the work starts, and the number turns up when the door is already in pieces. So we run it backwards.

What is the door actually doing?
Pick the one that sounds like yours. You will get the usual cause, what a tech checks first, and how the visit tends to go.
It made a bang and now it will not lift
- Usually
- Almost always a broken spring. The bang is the steel letting go, and the opener alone cannot lift a door that heavy.
- What the tech checks
- The tech looks for the gap in the coil above the door, weighs the door by hand, then checks the cables and drums that took the shock.
- What happens next
- Springs are replaced, never repaired, and they are replaced in pairs when both are the same age so you are not back here in a month.
The remote or the wall button does nothing
- Usually
- Usually the opener rather than the door: a dead remote, a lost pairing, a tripped safety sensor, or a worn drive gear.
- What the tech checks
- The tech tests the wall button against the remote to split the fault, checks the sensor beam alignment, then listens to the motor under load.
- What happens next
- Most openers are back in service the same visit. If yours is past helping, you hear that plainly, with the replacement price.
It came off the track or hangs crooked
- Usually
- A jumped cable, a bent track, or a roller out of its groove, often after the door met a car bumper.
- What the tech checks
- The tech takes the tension off first, resets the cables on the drums evenly, then runs the door by hand to find where it binds.
- What happens next
- Stop using the opener until it is back on track. Forcing it turns a track repair into a panel repair.
It grinds, squeals or shudders on the way up
- Usually
- Worn rollers, dry bearings, or a door that has drifted out of balance and is dragging on one side.
- What the tech checks
- The tech disconnects the opener and lifts the door halfway. A balanced door stays put. One that drops or climbs is pulling on everything.
- What happens next
- This is the cheapest thing on this list to fix and the most expensive to ignore. Noise is a door telling you which part is next.
It starts to close, then goes back up
- Usually
- The safety sensors near the floor, nine times out of ten. Sun glare, a knocked bracket, or a cobweb across the lens.
- What the tech checks
- The tech aligns both sensor eyes until the indicator holds steady, then tests the reverse with an obstruction so the safety still works.
- What happens next
- Never tape the sensors over to force it shut. That safety is the reason the door stops for a child or a pet.
It is stuck open and the house is wide open
- Usually
- A snapped spring or cable most of the time, which is why the door will not stay down.
- What the tech checks
- This one we treat as urgent. The call gets answered whatever the hour and the aim is to get the house closed the same day.
- What happens next
- If you have to leave it, unplug the opener and lock the interior door to the house. Then call and tell us it is open.

You quote one price and charge another. Why would this be any different?
Because you hear the number twice before we start: once on the phone from what you describe, and again from the tech standing at the door. If the tech finds something else, the work stops and you decide. Nothing gets added while your back is turned.
What does a garage door repair cost?
It depends on the part and how many of them. One spring is not two, and an opener sensor is not a motor. We will not guess a number on a website and surprise you with a different one, so tell us what the door is doing and you get the real figure before we book.
Can someone actually come out today?
Often yes, and the call is answered whatever the hour. Pick an arrival window when you book and we confirm it by phone. If the day is full we tell you that instead of holding the slot and disappointing you later.
My car is shut in the garage. What do I do right now?
Do not haul on the door. If a spring is broken the door weighs what a small motorbike weighs and the opener will not lift it. Pull the red emergency cord to release the opener, then call us and say the car is trapped so we can prioritise it.
What happens if the same part fails again?
The parts and the labour are warranted. Call the same number, tell us it is a return visit on work we did, and we come back out to it. Ask for the written terms when the tech is with you and you will get them.
Do you work on my brand of opener?
Yes. LiftMaster, Genie and Chamberlain are the ones we see most, and we carry parts for them. Craftsman, Wayne Dalton, Clopay, Amarr and the rest are all familiar. Tell us the name on the motor when you call and the tech turns up with the right parts.
The spring snapped. Can I not just replace it myself?
You can buy the part, and people do get hurt doing it. A torsion spring holds enough wound energy to break a hand, and the winding bars are the whole job. It is the one repair on a garage door we would tell a friend to hand over.
